the nature of mankind
were you ever in the city, Mr. Martin?
yes, i have passed through several. in some, half of the inhabitants are mad; in others, they are too artful; in others, they are mostly simple and stupid; in still others, they affect to be witty. in all of them, however, the chief occupation is making love, the second is slander, and the third is talking nonsense.
but have you 'seen' the city, Mr. Martin?
yes, i have. it contains all the kinds i have mentioned. it is chaos, a throng, where everyone seeks for pleasure, and, as far as i could make out, scarcely anyone finds it, and i have also seen scarcely a city that did not wish the ruin of its neoghbouring city; nor a family that did not wish to exterminate some other family. everywhere the weak hate the powerful, before whom they crawl, and the powerful treat the weak like sheep, selling their wool and their carcases.
the devil must be in you, Mr. Martin
perhaps he is. but even in cities that seem to be at peace, where the arts flourish, men are eaten up with envy, cares, and disquiets worse than the sufferings of a town under siege. secret chagrins are even more bitter than public calamities.
yet there is some good in the world.
may be so, but it has never come to my notice. well, you see how men treat one another.
'tis true, there is something diabolical in this business. sir, while we are on the subjects, do you believe that the earth was originally sea, as stated in that great book that belongs to the captain?
i believe nothing of the sort, any more than i do all the other fancies that have been foisted upon us through the centuries.
but to what end, do you think, was the world formed?
to turn our brains.
do you think that men always slaughtered one another, as they do nowadays? were there always liars, cheats, traitors, brigands, weaklings, deceivers, cowards, enviers, gluttons, drunkards, misers, sycopants, butchers, slanderers, debauchees, fanatics, hypocrites and fools?
do you think that hawks have always devoured pigeons at every opportunity?
doubtless!
well, then, if hawks have always been the same, why should men have been altered?
ah, but there is a great difference, for free will.......

the man and i
he looked at me. the look he had on his eyes says it all. he was eager, and ready to savour the moment. i couldn’t gather any sense of reeling from his body language, and from the way he shrugs and react to our conversation, he was at ease. “sure u’r ok with this?”, i asked, casually. i dont want to sound hurried and carefull. i dont want to send him any hint of concern in...

last night
there was me. standing, and throwing pebbles to the ground. the small sound it made as it hits the tarmac entices me to keep going at it, but it wasn’t long before i realized that my neighbour has had his eyes on me. “you’re not holding a ciggy”, the voice in my head said to me. “standing and holding a fag wont raise any curiousity. it’s an activity, something...

palm of my hand
on the palm of my hand there’s a line. winding, and shrinking nearing the end. close to it, a spiralling semi-circle adjacent to a black spot. black; as it is not white, or pink-ish or red-ish. could be a mole. a few creases has formed, smearing my thumbprint, and the skin needs ointment. a sign of age, taxing my youth … my brain is drained figuring, if i could say; i...
